The Stelvio in South Tyrol is known for its skiing area. Because it is the only skiing area which is opened only in summer.
From November until May the street to the Stelvio is closed for winter.
Many athletes from all over Europe come to the Stelvio during summer to do a skiing training.
More than 20 pistes km are a welcome change for skiers. There are slopes for beginners and also for advanced skiers.
Spring is the perfect time of the year to do ski mountaineering on the Stelvio. The conditions are perfect to climb the Tuckettspitze, the Geisterspitze and the Madatsch glacier and the ideal starting point is the Berghotel Franzenshöhe.
Many mountaineers stay at the Berghotel Franzenshöhe because of the quiet position, the delicious food and the hearty hospitality.
Above certain high altitudes, air contains less oxygen, and the human organism must adjust itself to this condition. By breathing in the thin air, the cardiovascular system, and blood are most immediately affected by this. In the course of high-altitude training, the body adapts to this situation, so that it reaches the same levels of performance as it is achieved at more normal altitudes. When a peak athlete then returns to regions that lie at lower altitudes, his body will be able to draw on energy reserves not before available to him. This condition may last for several weeks.
